Lobsteropolis, which exists in the blockchain-based virtual world of Decentraland, is a fully digital city based on the Lobster universe by British contemporary artist Philip Colbert. Born in Scotland, Mr Colbert now lives and works in London and is a graduate of the University of St Andrews. Before the idea of Lobsteropolis in the Metaverse, Colbert was already well known in the pop art world: Former Vogue editor Andre Leon Talley called him a godson of legendary pop art figure Andy Warhol.

Colbert’s work, imbued with a Pop Art ethos of High Art and Low Culture, has already attracted the approval of major figures in the art world such as renowned auctioneer and curator Simon de Pury and Iraqi businessman and contemporary art collector Charles Saatchi. The fashion and style bible i-D Magazine once called him the crown prince of pop art.

Everyone is welcome

Non-burning tokens (NFTs) have gained significant popularity recently, and the art of NFTs is arguably a ubiquitous concept, even for those unfamiliar with cryptocurrencies and the blockchain space. Nowadays, almost anyone can punch a piece of art and sell it on the NFT market, just like SuperRare.

Disruptive is and will continue to be one of the main buzzwords that pop up every time blockchain becomes a topic of discussion. It is therefore not surprising that new technologies are being used as the basis for innovative approaches to gallery exhibitions.

Lobsteropolis City is hosting Colbert’s first all-digital art exhibition, featuring some of his popular works such as Lobster Fountain and Cryptofixtion. Visitors will also be able to view several previously unseen works by Colbert in the Pury’s NFT auctions.

One of these invisible NFEs is a hybrid of artwork and musical performance called Lob-Ster De-Vo, created in collaboration with American new wave band Devo. The theme of rock band evolution often involves multimedia forms of expression that are central to the emerging narrative of 21st century contemporary art. The ideas of the twentieth century have undoubtedly become central.

In Lobsteropolis, the character of Colbert the lobster is once again the protagonist of art in a visualization that seems to be both an art exhibition and an expression of the artist’s world. Through my art I build my own artistic world in which my lobster character is the main narrator, and the digital space allows me to explore that story in a new way, he explains in an interview with Cointelegraph magazine.

Colbert calls the digital city, which took three years to build, a labor of love:

I have a great team helping me with programming and uploading to Decentral and the team at Vegas City has been a great help with programming. The digital aspect of my work has largely been a labor of love – I’ve been building this infrastructure for a while.

Pop Art goes digital

Lobsteropolis incorporates elements of Colbert’s work from a number of international exhibitions and museum presentations, including his famous exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery in 2020. However, the city is not only an art exhibition, but also an interactive space with an open world for digital interaction.

Even before COVID-19, advances in virtual and augmented reality were pushing the boundaries of digital interaction. There are already immersive game landscapes where users can create avatars to discover and explore vast digital environments, with real digital natives and even more fantastic elements.

Visitors to Lobsteropolis have many options for exploring the city. One of the attractions is the Lobster Lounge: a concert hall for Avatar bands and an event space where Avatars can give talks, Colbert explains, adding:

Lobsteropolis City has a strong play aspect where avatars can interact with other people and create a level of fantasy.

In the city of Vegas, located in Decentraland, Colbert’s digital lobster country, there is of course a casino. There’s also a casino where avatars get lobster coins and can play blackjack, slot machines and buy digital products in my supermarket, Colbert says.

Colbert himself admits to being obsessed with the intersection of art and music. According to him, the NFT space creates a platform to connect the two art forms in a revolutionary way.

In addition to co-creating the Lob-Ster De-Vo NFT piece, the band will also play a live DJ set at Lobster Land Records, located next to the Lobster Land Museum, site of the Pury auction.

Mr. Colbert’s collaboration with the group to create Lob-Ster De-Vo will be the focus of the first auction, which will take place on the 30th. The month of June will take place. According to the artist, Lob-Ster De-Vo NFT explores the role of digital ideology in the coming era of virtually oriented human interaction.

For Colbert, Lob-Ster De-Vo NFT is an exploration of the role art plays as humanity moves into a more mature and digitized space. The song is also a tribute to Devo’s 1981 cult hit, Through being cool, including the theme with the three crucifixes.

Colbert recalls his first experiences with NFT and how they led him to create Lobsteropolis, a digital city: The first NFT I did was called Cryptofixtion. I wanted to make a sculpture of a crucifix in the shape of a lobster, inspired by my study of Dali’s paintings and the idea of technology as a new religion.

Modern philosophy is full of speculation about the intertwining of technology and religion, especially in the context of these developments, which arguably offer an alternative transcendental experience.

Given our obsession with phones as a way to consume experiences, the idea of a screen crossover seemed quite logical, says Colbert, who adds:

Then I realized it works better as a digital world: Some things are more infinite, pure and powerful in digital form. I’ve been following my own process ever since.

Immortality and perfection

This search for infinite, pure and powerful possibilities inevitably led Colbert to the digital world, and inevitably to NFT. Forget cubism. It is an artistic expression and experience on another level. With the advent of NFT, the digital art movement has become a tidal wave, and so many ideas have become possible.

Colbert is among those who believe that new art forms will emerge at the intersection of NFT and contemporary art, perhaps even new art movements that will emerge as more artists engage in blockchain-based metaverse.

Crossovers and hybrids are very interesting – why stay pigeonholed when you can interact between the two? Digital art is immortal in its perfection, and physical art can always be copied in a way that digital art cannot.

With NFT, artists can now include metadata – unique digital attributes – in their work. This feature can give digital art an added sense of originality and authenticity. According to Colbert, there are always questions about authenticity. People are obsessed with authenticity, it’s the foundation of our value system.

Colbert’s reflections on immortality and the perfection of digital art can also serve as a lens through which we can view his artistic engagement with the idea of technology as a new religion. Art as a means of philosophical commentary perhaps takes on an even greater socio-epistemic value in the context of the twenty-first century movement towards full digital immortality.

As digital art continues to evolve, Colbert expects NFT technology to play an important role, especially with the advent of interactive metaverse environments. According to Colbert, working in the metaverse offers the next wave of opportunities to change the way we see and perceive digital art.

Artistically, I was inspired by the holistic idea. It suggests a way to change the context. If you change the context, you change your perspective on something, and then it changes.

It is often difficult to pinpoint the exact moment of a tipping point – the point at which a particular technological achievement has come about. This reality has been applied to paradigm-shifting breakthroughs, such as the electrical revolution in the late 19th and early 20th century. century and the birth of the mobile Internet era.
