The venture funds poured over $6.5 billion into crypto in Q3 2021. That number is a record for the third quarter of any year, and it’s also something that very few people predicted would happen years ago when cryptocurrency was still an emerging market with no real use case outside of trading. The rapid growth has been fueled by blockchain-powered games as well as other industries shifting to adopt decentralized systems such as those found on the Ethereum platform.

According to CB Insights, VC financing for crypto rose 384 percent in the first nine months of this year compared to the same time last year. The total amount of money invested in venture capital this year was an astonishing $15 billion. 

With 24 agreements, Coinbase Ventures was by far the most active crypto investor in the third quarter, while CMT Digital and Polychain Capital tied for second with nine apiece.

For the third quarter, the average global deal in the blockchain sector was $21 million. FTX, Sorare, Genesis Digital Assets, Fireblock, and Bitpanda were among the top ten equity transactions.

In terms of geography, the United States leads in venture capital financing, followed by Asia and Europe. In the third quarter, funding from the United States increased 11 times year on year to a new high of $2.97 billion.  

This quarter, crypto exchanges raised about $2 billion in venture funding, a new high. In addition, four more crypto exchange unicorns were born in Q3, bringing the total number of unicorns this year to 11. The United States also has the most Unicorns this year, with a total of seven. 

It’s no surprise that NFT investment has increased by 6,523 percent year over year, with 46 agreements for NFT businesses in the third quarter. 

Coinbase Ventures, Jump Capital, B Capital Group, Polychain Capital, and Lightspeed Venture Partners were the top investors by business count, according to the study.
